How Can I Prepare for the Holidays After Having a Stroke?

In Blog by doralneuro

The holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but after having a stroke, they can be more stressful than enjoyable. Do you want to learn how to prepare for the holidays as a stroke survivor? Here are some tips.

Plan Ahead

It’s important to plan ahead so that you can relax when it comes time to celebrate. In the weeks and days leading up to your holiday celebration, make sure that you have everything lined up. From decorations and cooking to cleaning and shopping, the holidays can be a lot. Preparing as much as possible will make it more manageable.

Take Extra Time for Travel

With the COVID-19 pandemic still in full effect, it is not advisable for patients to travel after having a stroke. According to Shyam Prabhakaran, MD, MS, Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Chicago, “some patients with risk factors for stroke and heart disease, as well as those who have previously experienced a stroke, are at higher risk of serious complications of COVID-19, including death.”

The decision to travel is, of course, yours to make. Traveling by car is the safest form of transportation during the pandemic. If you do decide to travel for the holidays, it is a good idea to build extra time into your itinerary. As a rule of thumb, aim to stop at least once every two hours for bathroom breaks and stretching.

Use Mobility Aids When Necessary

If you are celebrating somewhere away from home, don’t forget to pack all the mobility aids that you need. You may have a difficult time finding a shower seat while traveling, so make a note to pack yours. Buying an extra cane or walker could also come in handy in case yours is damaged in transit.

Even if you decide to stay home or have family in your home, it is important to continue using your mobility aids as necessary. Even familiar flooring can become difficult to walk on without your usual cane or walking aid.

Stick to Your Routine as Much as Possible

The holidays are a stressful time no matter who you are, so one way to prepare for this busy time of year after having a stroke is to stick to your routines as much as possible. Do this in the days and weeks leading up to the celebrations and during the festivities.

If You Can’t Travel, Schedule a Zoom Party

It is critical to take care of your mental health as well as your physical health during the holidays. If your medical condition prevents you from traveling to see friends and family after having a stroke, you can still socialize to mark the occasion. Ask someone in your life to help you set up a virtual holiday party, and tell your family to reserve time during their day to share in the joy.
